So what’s next for the up-until-last-month-little-known creative team of “Love/Murder?” Director Darko Tresnjak is working with Steve Lutvak and Robert L. Freedman on a new musical, “Campaign of the Century.” I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at Hartford Stage in the next year or two.

The new work is based on Greg Mitchell’s book “Campaign of the Century: Upton Sinclair’s Race for Governor of California and the Birth of Media Politics”about the 1934 race which pitted the muck-raking author (“The Jungle”) against Republican incumbent Frank Merriam. “There’s Hollywood and Washington and Joan Crawford and Shirley Temple and Irving Thalberg all in the show,” says Tresnjak. “It’s an astonishing piece.”

Tresnjak says he will be spending the early part in 2014 developing the work with Lutvak and Freedman He says there will be a new musical for Hartford Stage in the 2014-15 season — as well as the following season. But also in the wings are “The Band’s Visit,” that Harold Prince is attached to, based on the 2007 Israeli film, and Love and Other Fables,” which got scratched from this May’s slot because it needed more work and its director John Rando was unavailable.
